Popular television drama Anupamaa is once again sparking conversation with a socially relevant storyline—this time addressing the often-overlooked issue of abuse against men. Produced by Rajan Shahi and Deepa Shahi, the show’s latest track explores how domestic abuse can also affect men, a reality that rarely finds space in mainstream television narratives.
In a recent episode, Moti Baa’s niece Kirti appears to be the ideal, caring wife to her husband Kapil. But behind closed doors, she manipulates, blackmails, and emotionally tortures him. Kapil struggles to reveal the truth, aware that society often refuses to see men as victims—especially when the abuser maintains a flawless public image.
Anupamaa, known for challenging societal stereotypes, begins to sense that something is wrong. Refusing to judge the situation through gender bias, she notices the warning signs and eventually confronts Kirti in front of the family, exposing the abuse.
The sequence aims to highlight an uncomfortable but important truth: domestic violence is not defined by gender, and male victims often suffer in silence due to stigma and social expectations to “man up.”
Lead actress Rupali Ganguly, who plays Anupamaa, applauded the makers for tackling sensitive topics through the show.
“The makers of Anupamaa deserve appreciation for bringing up issues that are still spoken about in hushed tones in our society. Through the show, we try to address what is happening around us and start conversations that matter,” she said.
Ganguly added that the show has consistently attempted to reflect real social concerns—ranging from respect for farmers to compassion for animals—and that the new track continues that tradition by shedding light on male abuse and domestic violence.
With this storyline, Anupamaa once again positions itself as more than just entertainment, using its narrative to highlight complex social realities and encourage dialogue among viewers.
