The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the inaugural edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG), which will be held from March 25 to April 6, 2026. The event will take place across three cities in Chhattisgarh — Raipur, Jagdalpur and Sarguja. The initiative aims to provide a national platform for talented athletes from tribal communities across India.
Seven Medal Sports to Feature in the Event
The Games will include seven medal sports: athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming and wrestling. In addition, mallakhamb and kabaddi will be included as demonstration sports. Tribal athletes from most states and Union Territories of India are expected to participate, making the event a significant national sporting competition.
Government’s Initiative to Expand Sporting Opportunities
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya said that the Khelo India Tribal Games are part of the government’s effort to expand opportunities for young people interested in sports. He added that the initiative aligns with the vision of Narendra Modi for building a developed India, where sports play a crucial role in youth empowerment and national progress.
Boost for Tribal Talent and Grassroots Development
According to Dr. Mandaviya, tribal regions in India have immense sporting talent that needs proper support and exposure. The Games aim to identify promising athletes at an early stage, provide systematic support, and integrate them into the national sports framework to strengthen India’s future sporting talent pool.
‘Morveer’ Unveiled as Official Mascot
The official mascot of the Games is “Morveer,” a name inspired by the cultural identity of Chhattisgarh. The word “Mor” means “ours” in Chhattisgarhi, while “Veer” represents courage and bravery. The event will be organised jointly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association, and the Chhattisgarh state organising committee, marking a major step toward empowering tribal athletes and promoting sports at the grassroots level.
