1. President of the European Council, Antonio Luis Santos da Costa and the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, were accorded a Guard of Honour and a ceremonial welcome at the airport in New Delhi yesterday. The leaders are on a state visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr Costa and Ms Leyen will be the chief guests for the 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartvya Path today.

2. Establishment of a Supercomputing Cluster in India. It’s objective is Collaboration between C-DAC (India) and G-42 (UAE) under the AI India Mission; facility to support research, application development and commercial.

3. Two major UAE firms will establish operations in GIFT City, Gujarat:
First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) will open a branch to promote trade and investment flows.
DP World will operate leasing services for its global shipping fleet.

4. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained 21 Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, while they were attempting to illegally cross into India through the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah on Friday afternoon.

5. The Gandak river, flowing along the India–Nepal border through West Champaran district of Bihar, has emerged as the second most important riverine habitat for gharials in the subcontinent, after the Chambal.

1. UNESCO has announced an emergency assistance package to protect cultural heritage and sustain education in parts of Vietnam which were heavily affected by storms in November last year. The emergency assistance package is valued at around 740,000 dollars.

2. Pakistan, Bangladesh Foreign Ministers commit to build closer ties: The two leaders Ishaq Dar and his Bangladeshi counterpart Mohammad Touhid Hossain also exchanged views on the current regional and international developments and underscored the importance of sustained engagement to advance shared interests and promote regional peace and prosperity.

3. In Bangladesh, a 23-year-old Hindu mechanic, Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, was burned to death after miscreants allegedly set fire to the car repair workshop where he was sleeping late on January 23 in Narsingdi town, triggering renewed criticism of Bangladesh’s law-and-order situation under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.

4. Thousands of flights have been cancelled as the winter storm intensified in the United States over the weekend.

5. In US, immigration agents shot and killed a US citizen Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis, sparking protests and condemnations from local leaders in the second such incident this month. Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was an intensive care nurse at the Veterans Administration and was upset by President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in his city.

6. In Pakistan, a court sentenced lawyers Zainab Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha to 17 years in prison. Authorities arrested the couple in Islamabad after claiming their social media posts were against the state and its security.
