Prithvi Theatre is set to make a special appearance at Lollapalooza India 2026 with the debut edition of Prithvi Presents, a thoughtfully curated musical ensemble that pays tribute to the legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain.
Rooted in a long and meaningful association that began in 1984, when Ustad Zakir Hussain became closely connected with Prithvi Theatre through the Memorial Concerts, this performance marks a natural evolution of that legacy. Stepping beyond Prithvi’s intimate stage and onto a global festival platform, the ensemble reflects Zakir sa’ab’s lifelong commitment to championing exceptional musicians and introducing them to newer, wider audiences.
The performance will take place on 24th January at Lollapalooza India, Mumbai, following Prithvi Theatre’s special invitation to present a gig at the festival.
The set has been designed as a moving tribute, anchored by a clip from one of the historic Prithvi Theatre Memorial Concerts, where Ustad Zakir Hussain speaks about the importance of recognising and nurturing artists. This moment forms the emotional core of the performance. Complementing the music, the performers will be dressed in specially designed attire by House of Masaba, adding a contemporary visual language to the evening while honouring its cultural roots.
Speaking about the curation, Kunal Kapoor, Trustee, Prithvi Theatre, shares: “Zakir sa’ab believed deeply in the idea of standing by artists—especially those just beginning to find their voice. Putting this ensemble together with Gino and Zubin felt instinctive. Each musician here brings a distinct energy, and presenting them at Lollapalooza allows us to extend Zakir sa’ab’s vision into a contemporary, global context.”
Guided by this ethos, Zubin Balaporia, Gino Banks, and the Prithvi Theatre team have curated an ensemble of outstanding young and accomplished musicians, who will perform a selection of Zakir Hussain’s favourite compositions, interpreted with fresh sensibilities while remaining grounded in tradition.
