How Do Clouds Float?
Clouds form when the sun creates warm, moist air by heating and evaporating water on the earth’s surface. The warm, moist air is less dense than the cold air above it, so that warm air rises.
Clouds are made of billions of tiny water droplets or ice crystals, spread out over a huge volume, making their overall density much lower than the surrounding air, and they are constantly supported by rising warm air (updrafts) that keeps them buoyant, much like dust motes in sunlight or a boat on water.
