1. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), also known as Non-Resident (NRI) Day, is observed every year on January 9 to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contribution of the Overseas Indian community to India’s development. The day holds deep historical importance as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa on 9 January 1915, a moment that later shaped India’s freedom struggle.

2. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar yesterday meets President of France, Emmanuel Macron, in Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron, reaffirms India France strategic partnership.

India has firmly rebutted claims by US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that bilateral trade negotiations stalled due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failure to telephone President Donald Trump.Lutnick made these remarks on the All-In Podcast, a business and technology program hosted by venture capitalists, suggesting the deal was nearly finalised but faltered over this reluctance.

4. Dhruva Space Private Ltd, a Hyderabad-based full-stack space engineering company, has announced Polar Access-1 (PA-1), a program enabling ten space missions aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) PSLV-C62 rocket.The PSLV-C62 launch is scheduled for 10:17 am on 12 January from Sriharikota, carrying India’s strategic satellite EOS-N1 as the primary payload.

5. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his intention to visit India next month, coinciding with New Delhi’s hosting of the AI Impact Summit 2026.

1. Nepal removes legal hurdles to obtain the citizenship certificate for children without a father’s identity in the mother’s name. With the new move, anyone whose father’s identity is not revealed would get the citizenship certificate in the mother’s name following the approval of the Nepal Citizenship (Fourth Amendment) Regulations, 2082.

2. A day after Iran imposed a near-total nationwide internet blackout, with phone calls failing to connect and flights cancelled, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused protesters of acting on behalf of U.S. President Donald Trump.

3. Exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi condemned the Iranian government for shutting down the internet and communications during protests. He also urged all European leaders to follow the lead of US President Donald Trump in supporting the Iranian people and holding the regime to account.

4. Israeli strikes across Gaza killed 13 people. Israel’s military said it carried out strikes on Hamas infrastructure in southern and northern Gaza today in response to a failed projectile launch by militants from the Gaza City area. The phased ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains in its initial stage, as efforts continue to recover the remains of a hostage held in Gaza.

5. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed regret over the United States decision to withdraw from several UN entities. Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, stressed that member states are legally obligated to fund UN budgets under the UN Charter.

6. US President Donald Trump has said that Cuba is facing a severe economic crisis after US action in Venezuela.

7. In the Philippines huge mound of garbage collapsed in a waste segregation facility in a central Philippine city, killing one person and leaving at least 27 others missing.
