1. External Affairs Minister S said that India will exercise the right to defend itself from terrorism and that no one can dictate how India exercises its defence. Speaking at the inauguration of Shaastra 2026- IIT Madras Techno-Entertainment fest at Chennai, he said that India will do whatever is required to defend itself.

3. India expressed grief over the tragic fire explosion in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. 2. For the first time in its independent history, Bangladesh will allow postal ballots in the upcoming election scheduled for 12 February 2026.

The Election Commission of Bangladesh has started the facilitation process with the help of international postal services that would allow voters to mail the ballots on time to be counted after physical voting ends in Bangladesh.

3. Mount Etna begins violent eruption in 2026: Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reports that since the afternoon of January 1, 2026, effusive lava has been pouring from a new fracture inside the Valle del Bove on Etna’s eastern flank.

4. Two more Baloch civilians were forcibly disappeared by Pakistani forces amid a growing wave of enforced disappearances across Balochistan.

5. US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with support for protesters if Iranian security forces resort to firing on demonstrators. In a social media post, Mr Trump said the unrest has left several dead in Iran.

6. In Gambia, seven people were found dead, and 96 others were rescued after a boat carrying migrants capsized overnight in northwest Gambia. The country’s defence ministry said that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing and the boat may have been carrying more than 200 people.

7. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has said the island is determined to defend its sovereignty and boost its defence in the face of China’s increasing expansion. This comes after Beijing fired rockets towards the island as part of military drills.

8. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has declared a new 60-day state of emergency in nine provinces and three municipalities. This comes due to an increase in criminal violence, which has caused serious internal commotion.
