The External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka yesterday morning to attend the funeral of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

2. The Central Government has signed an agreement with a private marine company based in Goa under the Indo-Canada Collaborative Industrial Research and Development Programme for the project titled The Smart Sea Project by VACE.

1. Iran has appointed a new central bank governor following the resignation of the incumbent amid mass protests triggered by a sharp fall in the national currency.

2. The United Arab Emirates rang in #NewYear2026 with major fireworks and drone displays : In Dubai, the Burj Khalifa was illuminated with a coordinated display of fireworks, LED visuals, lasers and fountain choreography. Fireworks were also staged at dozens of locations across the city.

3. Jordan has said it is closely monitoring developments in Yemen and reaffirmed its support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation, safeguarding the country’s security and stability, respecting its sovereignty and meeting the aspirations of the Yemeni people.

4. Mali and Burkina Faso have announced a travel ban on U.S. citizens in response to a similar measure introduced by the Trump administration earlier this month.

5. Thailand released 18 Cambodian soldiers under an renewed ceasefire agreed by the two countries. The Southeast Asian neighbours agreed to halt fighting on 27 December, ending about 20 days of clashes that killed at least 101 people and displaced more than half a million civilians on both sides.

6. South Korea will extend the waiver on visa processing fees for an additional six months for group tourists from India, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia. Finance Minister of South Korea Koo Yun-cheol said, fee exemption for C-3-2 visas will continue till the end of June next year.

7. In Iran, protests over soaring inflation and the collapse of Iran’s currency have spread from Tehran to multiple cities for a third day. It began as a strike by Tehran’s Grand Bazaar shopkeepers and now has grown into nationwide demonstrations, with police using tear gas in some areas.

8. Denmark has ended letter delivery this week, closing a 400-year postal tradition as digital communication makes physical mail uneconomical.

9. The Free Balochistan Movement has intensified its international advocacy in the form of protest against enforced disappearance of women in Balochistan by Pakistani security forces, in the British city of Manchester.

10. The United Nations (UN) has launched a 1.71 US billion humanitarian appeal for Afghanistan in 2026, as the country is expected to remain one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. About 21.9 million people will need aid, with 17.4 million facing acute food insecurity, including 4.7 million in emergency conditions.
