19. Five new Supreme Court judges took oath on Monday. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath to the newly sworn-in judges in the presence of all judges of the Supreme Court.
The newly sworn-in judges are :
(i) Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court.
(ii) Justice Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
(iii) Justice P. V. Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
(iv) Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Judge, Patna High Court and
(v) Justice Manoj Misra, Judge, Allahabad High Court.
Currently, the Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of thirty-four Judges and is presently functioning with twenty-seven Judges.
CRIME REPORT
1. National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested seven accused from Phulwarisharif area in Bihar in connection with the Popular Front of India (PFI) case.
2. The Supreme Court on Monday advanced to February 7 the hearing on a plea challenging the appointment of lawyer Lekshmana Chandra Victoria Gowri as a judge of the Madras high court, soon after the Centre notified her judgeship.
3. Police and district administrations across Chhattisgarh have recovered and returned ₹30 crore to 37,000 investors, who had been cheated by chit fund scams.
4. Supreme Court to hear bail pleas of Christian Michel James, an alleged middleman in Agusta Westland chopper scam in which the CBI & ED have lodged two separate cases.
An Agusta Westland VVIP chopper scam is a corruption case where it has been alleged that bribes were paid to “middlemen”, perhaps even politicians, when India agreed to buy 12 AgustaWestland helicopters built by Italian defence manufacturing giant Finmeccanica at an estimated cost of Rs 3,600 crore.
February 2010, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of the time signed a contract to purchase 12 AgustaWestland AW101 helicopters at Rs 3,600 crore. These helicopters were supposed to be used for ferrying the President of India, the Prime Minister, and other such very, very important people. Former Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi: Tyagi was arrested on 9 December 2016 in connection with the case.

6. What is the issue with Adani Group?
On December 21, 2022, the market cap (at the close of trade) of the firm stood at Rs 4.45 lakh crore. Hindenburg Research in its report accused the conglomerate of “brazen stock manipulation, money laundering, and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades”.
Since the time US-based Hindenburg Research firm released its report on January 24, accusing Gautam Adani’s group of tax evasion, fraud schemes, and stock manipulations among others, the Indian conglomerate’s listed stocks have witnessed massive losses in valuation. Adani’s losses topped $110 billion. The group has dismissed the charges as lies.
Adani Enterprises recently decided to call off its ₹20,000 crore follow-on public offer and return the money it had collected from investors.

1. Light Combat Aircraft (Navy) and MIG29 K Fighter Aircraft successfully performed maiden landing and take off from India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant.
2. The first batch of aircraft participating at Aero India 2023 – those partaking in flypast and flying display – are scheduled to land in Bengaluru on February 7, while the other batch of planes (static display) will arrive between February 8 and 12.
3. Indian Air Force (IAF) launched a revised doctrine and laid out the role of air power in the “no war, no peace scenario” (NWNP). The doctrine highlighted the use of air power as part of a joint military strategy involving the two other forces.
