Passengers flying IndiGo faced a chaotic travel day across the country due to mass cancellations in excess of 300 flights, overcrowding airports and forcing travelers to wait for hours. Long queues, repeated delays, and sudden rescheduling frustrated passengers as they struggled to look for alternative travel options. Several passengers took to social media to share videos from packed terminals and alleged they were not given prior notice of cancellations. Aviation officials said disruptions affected both domestic and international routes to make this one of IndiGo’s most difficult operational days this year.
CEO Addresses Crisis in Internal Email
On the back of growing concerns, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers sent an internal email to its employees, acknowledging the severe impact on airline operations. He clarified that the situation did not arise because of one big incident alone but was an “accumulation of issues” that had built up over some time. According to him, a mix of staffing gaps, last-minute crew unavailability, and pressure on aircraft rotation resulted in a chain reaction, overwhelming the system. He called upon the staff to pull together to stabilize schedules, assuring them that corrective measures were already underway.
Passengers Demand Better Communication Many passengers also complained that the airline did not provide timely updates, adding to unnecessary distress. Several travelers said they got messages of cancellation only after they reached the airport, while others mentioned they were not informed about refunds or flights to destinations. Some domestic flyers had a long wait hoping for a takeoff of the delayed flight. It has led consumer rights groups to reproach airlines for doing poor crisis communication and pressed for more stringent rules to protect passenger interests during breakdowns. The Government Seeks Explanation From Airline Aviation authorities have asked IndiGo to submit a detailed report on what led to such widespread disruptions amidst growing public anger. Officials said the sudden spike in cancellations cannot be overlooked as IndiGo is India’s largest carrier and any instability in its operations affects the national aviation network. The government has also sought details on how the airline plans to assist passengers who missed important events, international connections, and business commitments due to the cancellations. IndiGo Promises Quick Recovery Amidst the turmoil, IndiGo has assured that flight operations will gradually return to their routines. It has already begun re-allocating crew members, adjusting flight blocks, and increasing monitoring to prevent further collapse in schedules. The passengers are still in a lurch, but as of now, the carrier claims it’s a temporary affair and service will stabilize over the coming days.
