Russian President Vladimir Putin will come to India on Thursday on a two-day visit to firm up strategic and economic ties between New Delhi and Moscow. The Russian leader will be hosted at a private dinner by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his house, with which high-level talks are scheduled to begin that would take up trade, energy cooperation, and defense collaboration.
Government officials said that besides discussing the expansion of bilateral trade, especially in oil, gas, and fertilizers, in which India has become a key importer from Russia since the Ukraine war, the leaders will assess the progress of work on long-term projects such as the Kudankulam nuclear power plant and discuss new avenues of investment in renewable energy and infrastructure.
As diplomatic sources suggest, India will push for smoother payment mechanisms to overcome the challenges of Western sanctions on Russian banks. Both countries are expected to discuss the possibility of conducting more trade in local currencies, reducing dependence on the US dollar.
Besides economic cooperation, the visit is likely to feature talks on defense supplies and joint manufacturing under the “Make in India” initiative. Russia has been a traditional defense partner for India, and efforts are underway to maintain supply chains and spare parts amid global disruptions.
The meeting will also provide an opportunity for India to reiterate its stand for peace and dialogue in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. While keeping a neutral position on the crisis, India has continued to underline that diplomacy is the only solution to end the crisis.
The timing of Putin’s visit to India is critical. The global geopolitical landscape is shifting fast, with both nations trying to balance their relations with Western powers and their regional allies. The talks between Modi and Putin would underline the strategic autonomy of India and Russia’s resolve for deepening ties with South Asia.
The official joint statement from the visit will be released after the delegation-level talks conclude on Friday.
