Omar Abdullah Says Kashmiris Face Unfair Suspicion After Delhi Blast

Omar Abdullah

The recent blast near Delhi’s Red Fort has shaken the city, leaving people anxious and authorities scrambling for answers. But the incident has also brought a long-running issue once again to the fore—how people from Kashmir are viewed outside the Valley. Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said that such moments immediately raise suspicion on Kashmiris, much before any fact is known.

Abdullah’s comments came during an interaction with reporters in the capital city, where he highlighted how stereotypes quickly take over the narrative after such attacks. The rush to link violence to Kashmir or its residents acts only to increase mistrust and alienation, he said.

‘Even Driving a Vehicle Feels Risky’

Sharing actual experiences, Abdullah said many Kashmiris who stay or work in other parts of the country feel a sudden change in the way they are treated immediately after some terror-related incident. Something as simple as driving a car, he noted, becomes stressful because people fear being pulled over or singled out due to their identity.

He felt that most Kashmiris are just regular people who abhor violence and believe in peace; yet, they are often judged by the actions of a few or by the assumptions people make from headlines.

Call for Responsible Dialogue and Sensitivity

Abdullah called for restraint by the public and the media to avoid generalization and sensationalism. He pointed out that rushing to link every security incident to Kashmir, without verified information, only deepens divides and fuels resentment. He said at a time when the country is already dealing with heightened emotions, this responsibility of journalists and political voices becomes even greater. He reminded that many Kashmiri students, workers, and professionals contribute across India and should not have to fear harassment or suspicion because of their background.

Investigation Continues as Security Tightens

Meanwhile, Delhi Police and central agencies are continuing their probe into the Red Fort blast, scanning CCTV footage and questioning people connected with the vehicle involved in the incident. Precautionary measures have been taken to increase security across key areas of the capital. No confirmation has been made linking it to a particular group or region, and the investigation is at a preliminary stage. As this investigation unfolds, the comments by Abdullah bring into sharp focus an issue parallel to, yet beyond, that of the blast: one that has become an ongoing reality for many Kashmiris trying to build normal lives away from home.
