budget railway gets highest ever allocation

1. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will begin discussions today on Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address to the Joint Sitting of both the Houses of the Parliament.

2. The Centre has allocated ₹36.22 crore for the President’s household expenditure in the Budget 2023-24, a drop of ₹10 crore from the revised estimates of the current fiscal.

3. Delhi State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has organized a 5-day ‘Jeevan Vidya Shivir’ for the teachers of Delhi government schools at Thyagaraja stadium.

About 4,000 teachers from Delhi government schools are expected to participate in this workshop between 28th January 2023 to 1st February 2023.

11. A religious leader of Dawoodi Bohra sect of Muslims has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi seeking a ban on female genital mutilation (FGM). Syedna Taher Fakhruddin, in his letter, stated that the practice of ‘khafz’ is often done on minors in an “unhygienic and unsanitary” condition without their consent. “This can lead to lifelong medical complications,” letter read.

1. DHANBAD HIGH-RISE TOWER FIRE: Jharkhand High Court takes suo motu cognizance of the incident. The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognizance of the Dhanbad high-rise fire tragedy in which 14 people were charred to death.

2. Delhi High Court to hear two petitions concerning 2020 North East Delhi riots, including those pertaining to alleged hate speeches by certain political leaders, & asked Centre to state if speeches in question are subject of proceedings before Supreme Court.

3. A Local ,Delhi court to decide whether to take cognisance of a supplementary charge sheet filed by ED against five individuals & seven companies in relation to alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

4..The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recovered 3.36 kg of cocaine from an Indian national who arrived in Mumbai from Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa. Drugs worth ₹33.6 cr hidden in soap recovered at Mumbai airport.

5. Telangana Police said they have rescued 2,814 children under the ‘Operation Smile-IX’ programme carried out in the state during the month of January 2023. “During the operation carried out to trace and rescue missing and trafficked children, boys numbering 2,421 and girls 393 were rescued.

6. Hearing a PIL against building of a dargah, the Rajasthan High Court said that taxpayers’ money should not be used for construction of a building of religious nature. The court stayed the proposed construction of the dargah at Jodhpur’s Mandore village.

1. Income from life insurance policies where the premium is over ₹5 lakh will no more be exempt from taxes, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Budget speech.

These include addressing the Global Skill Gaps, Gig and Platform Economy and Social Protection and Sustainable Financing of Social Security.

6. BUDGET 2023 :
Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the 2023 Union Budget presented by the Centre on Wednesday is just a ceremonial Budget. “There should have been more schemes, there should have been schemes related to unemployment, MGNREGA,” he said.

7. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to address the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) central board on February 11 and highlight key points of the Union Budget 2023-24.

8. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry was allocated a budget of ₹4,692 crore under the Union Budget 2023-24. Notably, the ministry was allocated a budget of ₹4,182 crore in the last fiscal year. The allocation to Prasar Bharati has been increased to ₹2,808.36 crore while Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has received ₹64.75 crore.
