Yami Gautam-Emraan Hashmi’s highly anticipated courtroom thriller Haq released on Friday, but its Day 1 box office number does not look inspiring. Early estimates suggest Haq has gathered approximately ₹1 crore all over India, which is a slow start despite the decent pre-release hype and good star cast.
Slow start despite buzz
Haq, directed by Kunal Deshmukh, follows a crusading journalist-turned-activist, enacted by Yami Gautam, who goes up against a corrupt corporate tycoon, played by Emraan Hashmi, in a legal battle. The trailer and performances generated enough interest; however, the movie unfortunately failed to convert the same into viewership.
Trade analysts say Haq was a victim of limited screen count and tough competition from big ongoing releases like Jolly LLB 3 and OG. Early mixed reviews and subdued word-of-mouth contributed to its tepid opening.
“Haq has strong performances, especially from Yami Gautam, but lacks mass connect, which is very essential for wider reach. Its first-day numbers reflect that challenge,” noted film critic Taran Adarsh.
Occupancy and audience response
It recorded an average occupancy of 8-10% in morning shows and improved marginally in the evening shows in metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune. The response was slightly better from multiplex audiences than single-screen viewers, but the overall turnout remained modest.
Net reactions on social media, however, were more positive, where many praised Yami Gautam’s performance as intense and Emraan Hashmi’s as restrained. A few viewers found the movie to be like Article 15 and Talvar in tone and appreciated the realistic treatment, though a bit slow.
Weekend hopes and box office outlook Producers are now banking on the weekend to bring in some respite. With strong word-of-mouth and the possibility of family audiences trickling in, trade experts predict Haq could see a 40–50% jump in collections on Saturday and Sunday. If the trend continues, it can close its opening weekend at ₹4–5 crores, which again will be on the lower side for a star-driven social thriller. Though it started slow, Haq can hope for a recovery if the film strikes an emotional chord with audiences in time. “The film has content — it just needs time and attention to find its audience,” says a trade insider.
