Akasa Air flight to Kochi returns to Bengaluru due to ‘fuel imbalance’

Akasa Air flight

Passengers on board an Akasa Air flight from Bengaluru to Kochi were in for a harrowing experience mid-air on Tuesday after the plane was forced to make a U-turn owing to a warning of fuel imbalance. The morning flight, which had set off, had to return to Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport soon after taking off when the pilots noticed the irregularity during the journey.

Safe landing due to emergency alert

Initial reports stated that the fuel distribution was showing some anomalies on board when the flight was airborne. The pilots, following safety procedures, declared a precautionary emergency to return to the base airport. Akasa Air has confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and no passengers or crew members were harmed.

The airport authorities had arranged for emergency response teams when the aircraft touched down, but no evacuation was required. “The flight landed normally and the passengers were safely deboarded,” the airline spokesperson said, adding that a thorough technical inspection was initiated immediately after landing.

Passengers share experience

Some passengers took to social media to describe their experience, saying the pilot handled the situation calmly and kept them informed throughout. “There was a minor panic initially when we turned around, but the crew remained composed,” wrote one passenger on X (formerly Twitter). Another traveller praised the professionalism of the airline staff, saying, “They reassured us every step of the way.”

Technical team investigates

Akasa Air’s engineering team launched a detailed investigation into what caused the fuel imbalance alert. The airline reiterated the action was taken “purely out of caution” and that passenger safety is paramount.

The incident also has been reported to the DGCA, and further independent review regarding adherence to safety protocols may be carried out by them.

Replacement flight arranged

Akasa then arranged an alternative aircraft, which took the passengers to Kochi late in the day. The airline apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured all possible preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. While such technical problems are seldom recorded, the calm and quick reaction of the crew averted any risk that may have arisen, further solidifying confidence in the airline’s safety practices.
