Delhi Paralysed on Dhanteras: Traffic Gridlock and Hordes Overwhelm New Delhi Railway Station

Traffic

Dhanteras festive mood became a day of traffic gridlock and packed commutes in the national capital, as thousands of citizens ventured out for last-minute shopping and travel before Diwali. Some major stretches in Delhi saw bumper-to-bumper traffic, while the New Delhi Railway Station had huge passenger rush, with long queues winding outside the entry gates and ticket counters.

City Roads Clog as Festive Shopping Peaks

From Karol Bagh to Lajpat Nagar, and Chandni Chowk to Sarojini Nagar, traffic crawled on Thursday evening. Bazaars were filled with people making last-minute purchases of jewellery, utensils, and festivity decoration — a Dhanteras ritual that is believed to usher good fortune.

The Delhi Traffic Police informed that arterial roads such as Ring Road, Mathura Road, ITO, and Moolchand were witnessing heavy jams, requesting others to desist from making unnecessary journeys and take public transport instead. “As a result of shopping on the occasion of Dhanteras and festive season, traffic is plying very slowly in central and south Delhi. Plan your journey accordingly,” the department tweeted on X (previously Twitter).

Railway Stations Jampacked Beyond Capacity

The crowd in New Delhi Railway Station grew from early morning, with people waiting in lines to board trains to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and other northern states to celebrate Diwali with loved ones. Platforms were packed, with announcements made continuously as trains experienced minor delays due to the sheer volume of passengers.

Railway authorities confirmed that more security staff were deployed to handle the crowd, and temporary barriers were installed to regulate passenger flow. Still, passengers complained about insufficient space, delays in boarding, and traffic jams outside the entrance of the station.

Police and Metro Services on High Alert

Delhi Metro too saw increased-than-average ridership, with passengers going for the quicker option in the face of city-wide congestion. Additional metro trains were put to work on Blue and Yellow Lines, particularly during rush hours.

In the meantime, over 1,500 Delhi Traffic Police personnel were deployed at major intersections and market areas. Official said attempts were being made to decongest areas around railway stations, markets and temples, where festive fervour is likely to last through the weekend.

Capital’s Festive Chaos Continues

With Diwali around the corner, Delhi is preparing itself for traffic jams and public congestion in the days to come. Officialdom has urged citizens to travel using public transport, make advance plans, and discourage car use to keep pollution and congestion at a minimum during the festival.
