After a day of a sudden turn of events at the Bengaluru International Arbitration Center, the police in the city have filed an FIR against advocate Rakesh Kishor for allegedly throwing a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud at a public function. The act, which left onlookers taken aback, has evoked stern condemnation across legal and political circles.
The Incident
This happened on Monday afternoon at a legal seminar that was addressed by the CJI. When Justice Chandrachud was about to wind up his speech, advocate Rakesh Kishor abruptly pulled off his shoe and hurled it in the direction of the stage, apparently screaming slogans regarding “judicial accountability.”
Security guards immediately stepped in and pinned down Kishor, although the CJI stayed calm and went on with the event. The shoe had flown past its mark and landed a few feet off the podium.
Eyewitnesses said the mood was tense, with most people in disbelief at the lawyer’s actions within proper legal convention.
Police Action
After the incident, a suo motu case was lodged at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru. Kishor has been arrested under sections related to assault, public nuisance, and attempt to disturb a public function.
Police authorities confirmed the lawyer was picked up for interrogation soon after the incident. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused was acting alone and had been nursing some grievances against the judiciary for quite a while,” a top officer said.
Legal Fraternity Reacts
The legal fraternity was quick to condemn the act as a “disgrace to the profession.” Some senior advocates described the attack as not only an insult to the CJI but also a direct challenge to the institution of justice.
The Bar Council of India has asked for a detailed report and stated that it would consider taking disciplinary action, including suspension of Kishor’s licence if guilty.
Broader Implications
Legal professionals assert this historic incident raises alarms regarding security measures for public events that include high-ranking judges. The police have allegedly stepped up security measures for future judicial events in the city.
Social media is, however, divided, with some users deploring the act as “shameful” while some fringe elements referred to it as an “expression of frustration.”
Agencies asserted that no act of violence against a constitutional figure would be tolerated.
