Kantara Chapter 1 Makers Warn Fans Against Copying with Daiva Characters: ‘Such Actions Amount to Trivializing Our Culture’

Kantara Chapter 1 1

With anticipation growing for Kantara Chapter 1, the creators of the highly-awaited film have put out a public advisory requesting fans not to emulate or act as Daiva characters in public. The advisory follows a few videos on social media where individuals were found dressing up and posing as

— the mythological spirit characters at the heart of the Kantara universe.

The Statement from the Makers

The production house for Kantara Chapter 1, headed by Hombale Films, posted an official statement on social media explaining that performances by Daiva are based on profound religious and cultural depth. They further explained that it may be disrespectful to the performing community to reproduce such acts outside their customary contexts.

The statement explained, “Daiva worship is no entertainment — it is a devotional ritual passed down over the ages. We implore fans and followers not to emulate these deities in the streets or on social media.”

Why the Advisory Was Needed

Over the last few weeks, a number of videos featuring fan collectives and cultural events revealed people dressing up as Daivas and re-enacting moments from the initial Kantara film. While a lot meant it as a sign of respect, traditionalists and cultural groups decried the trend, stating that it cheapens the sanctity of Daiva devotion and commodifies religious traditions.

The director of the film, who had insisted that Kantara borrowed heavily from coastal Karnataka’s Bhoota Kola tradition, explained that they wished to keep their audiences aware of the distinction between cinematic portrayal and actual worship.

Cultural Sensitivity and Responsibility

Folklore experts have backed the filmmakers’ plea, reasoning that Daiva’s impersonation sans context or ritual background could offend the sensibilities of local folk. Daiva worship is not a show for them but a spiritual vocation involving years of training, self-discipline, and dedication.

The production company reaffirmed that the new film is meant to celebrate and keep this cultural heritage intact, rather than sell it out.

Looking Ahead to Kantara Chapter 1

Helmed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara Chapter 1 is a prequel to the blockbuster of 2022 that delves into the background of the divine guardian revered in the first installment. The producers continue to stress that their intention is to honor tradition in a responsible manner and hope that the audience will do likewise.
