INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has reached Colombo on Thursday in the second leg of the two nation visit. Jaishankar is scheduled to meet the Sri Lankan leadership and hold discussions with Foreign Minister Ali Sabry.

2. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that Parliament of India will hold the P-20 Conference of the Parliament Speakers of the G-20 nations this year.

3. World’s longest River Cruise MV Ganga Vilas reached Kahalgao from Sultanganj late evening on Thursday.

4. A sensitisation workshop on G-20 Environment and Climate Sustainability will be held in Bengaluru on Friday.

The G-20 Working Group will focus on Arresting Land Degradation Restoration of Degraded Lands and Enhancement of Biodiversity. It will put specific emphasis on the restoration of areas affected by Forest Fire and Mining.

5. European Union’s (EU) assembly on Thursday called on member states to support the creation of a special court which will judge any war crime by Russia in Ukraine. A related non-binding resolution was approved by 472 votes.

1. In Bangladesh. A six-day long Jatra-festival was organised by the Shilpkala Academy in Dhaka to showcase the tradition which is struggling for survival.

2. US debt limit touched an all-time high of $31.41 trillion on Thursday. The debt ceiling is the legal limit on how much the federal government can borrow. The cap was last extended in December 2021 to $31.4 trillion.

3. Pension reform protests disrupt public services in France
Countrywide strikes massively disrupted transport, schools and public services across France on Thursday. Protesters demanded the government’s plan to raise nominal retirement age from 62 years to 64 years to avail pension be scrapped.

4. Wikipedia has unveiled a new look for the first time in over ten years on the heels of its 22nd birthday. English Wikipedia’s desktop interface features a new table of contents.

5. Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan next month. He is currently residing in the UK and has refused to return to Pakistan, citing a heart condition.

6. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Thursday announced that she will step down next month after being in power for six years.
