On vision and process of the building the team after the 2024 season which led to RCB’s first-ever title
“It started after we got knocked out last year, Andy and I spent about half a day just downloading everything we had from our heads, and we put it down into a basic plan. That became the bedrock of almost everything we have done since.”
“We had a vision at the back end of last season of how we wanted to play. That template became the basis for retention, release decisions, auction preparation, player preparation, and our tactics going into games.”
“If you nail your processes, you must have enough conviction that success becomes inevitable. If you just hunt winning a game or a trophy, it becomes pressure that you don’t need”
On Dinesh Karthik’s transition to a coaching and mentorship role
“I always knew that he was interested in coaching and that he has got coaching potential and leadership potential. I think he will go on to do special things as a coach.”
“DK has been great, and I am sure he is learning a huge amount. Hopefully RCB will get rewarded for that investment in him over the next few years, and I think Indian cricket will benefit as well.”
On Rajat Patidar as Captain
“He is a calm guy and one of the things I really admire in sportsmen is if they get braver under pressure. He gets braver under pressure. We watched him thrive under leadership pressure in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He batted beautifully for his team, took
them to the final, and it certainly did not make him risk averse. Being in Bangalore to witness that felt like a bit of a moment where you just go, this is the obvious thing. Let us give this guy an opportunity. We paid a lot of attention to several players,
but between me, Andy, DK, a few of the other guys that we trust, and Virat, it felt like an obvious decision in the end.”
On scouting and evaluation approach that shaped the auction strategy
“My general philosophy across most things is a nice blend of art and science. Data is important. I like data-informed environments, but I really value watching players live and seeing the context of the match situation, seeing how they respond to pressure.
You do not get a sense of that from a scorecard or video alone.”
