1. Stage is set for the Vice Presidential election today. The election is necessitated due to the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in July this year citing health reasons.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will cast the first vote today (September 9, 2025) in the vice-presidential polls, for which Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu, and Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde have been appointed election agents. The NDA has nominated Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan and the Opposition’s candidate is Justice (retired) B. Sudershan Reddy for the election.

3. President Smt. Droupadi Murmu today stressed upon the need for the Indian economy to be more self-reliant and excel in export. The President was addressing the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of Engineering Exports Promotion Council in New Delhi.

4. India has begun celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary singer, poet, and composer from Assam. Known for his powerful voice and timeless songs on humanity, equality, and cultural unity, Hazarika’s work continues to inspire generations. Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, in Assam.

5. Andhra Pradesh will establish a Space City in Tirupati. This is for launching private satellites. Skyroot Aerospace will develop the space city. Investment will be ₹400 cr. Two defence manufacturing hubs will also come up at Madakasira. Investment in these hubs will be ₹3,000 cr. The state aims to become a defence and aerospace manufacturing hub.

6. Principal Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ajay Kumar Sood has said that Agriculture contributes 15 to 20 per cent to India’s economic output. Mr Sood was addressing the two-day Dialogue NEXT event, organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in New Delhi.

7. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed to vehicular movement for the seventh consecutive day today due to ongoing restoration work at several stretches blocked by landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

8. In Bihar, the state government has announced an increase in the honorarium of Anganwadi Sevikas and Anganwadi Sahayikas. Now, the honorarium of Anganwadi Sevikas has been raised from 7,000 to 9,000 rupees, and that of Anganwadi Sahayikas from 4,000 to 4,500 rupees.

9. Labour and Employment Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya says, job creation and employment generation are key pillars of a strong and self-reliant India.

10. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting flood-affected Punjab today to take stock of the present situation. He is likely to hold a review meeting also. The Punjab government has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a Rs 20,000 crore relief package for the flood-affected state during his visit.

11. Bhupender Gupta, a power sector veteran, has been appointed as the new Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited.

12. The IMD has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning, in parts of Andhra Pradesh from September 8 to 12. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam on Tuesday.

1. The Supreme Court directs Election Commission to accept Aadhaar card as 12th document for proof of identity during electoral roll revision drive in Bihar.

2. The Bombay high court quashed and set aside the decision of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) to cancel the admission of two first-year students accused of tampering with the marks of a mid-term exam paper. HC considered that even without the increased marks, the students would have cleared the academic year and directed NMIMS to permit them to appear for re-examination and pursue further studies subject to the results.

3. The Security forces arrest six militants in Manipur, a Pakistani intruder arrested in Jammu and Kashmir.

1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a significant regulatory update requiring all cooperative banks- including Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs), State Cooperative Banks (StCBs), and District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs)-to submit their Internet Banking Return (R065) and Mobile Banking Return (R102) through the newly launched Centralised Information Management System (CIMS).

2. The commercial banks have requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to extend central government bond issuances into March of the current financial year, rather than concluding them in February. This is expected to ease weekly heavy issuance pressure.

3. India’s coal imports declined by 16.4% in July 2025, dropping to 21.08 million tonnes due to sluggish demand during the monsoon and high stock availability. Non-coking coal imports fell significantly, while coking coal imports rose.

4. India has unveiled a ₹11 lakh crore ($125 billion) plan to expand its high-speed road network fivefold by 2033, aiming to slash logistics costs and modernize infrastructure. The initiative includes adding 17,000 km of access-controlled expressways supporting speeds up to 120 km/h.

5. Punjab National Bank (PNB) has signed a ₹21,000 crore MoU with the Rajasthan government under the Rising Rajasthan initiative to promote socio-economic growth, particularly through financial inclusion, MSME support, and digital adoption.

1. Director Vivek Agnihotri’s film ‘The Bengal Files’ arrived cinemas on 5 September 2025. The release was surrounded by much controversy and clashed at the box office with Tiger Shroff’s action-packed ‘Baaghi 4’ and Hollywood horror ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’. With such heavy competition, the film has managed a modest start at the box office.

2. The unit of Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, starring Megastar Chiranjeevi and Nayanthara, will begin shooting a song sequence in Hyderabad from Monday. Directed by Anil Ravipudi, the film is slated for Sankranti 2026 release with music by Bheems Ceciroleo.

1. India to join Russia-led military drills, Pakistan to attend as observer: The final phase of the Zapad-2025 exercises will take place between September 12 and 16. The drills will focus on using troop formations to ensure the Union State’s military security. Belarusian and Russian forces will practise air defence and countering enemy sabotage groups.

2. India is all set to participate in two major military exercises with Russian troops. Two major military exercises are being conducted to further strengthen strategic cooperation. One is being held in Russia, called Zapad, while the Indra exercise will take place in India next month.

3. As part of the 50th Independence Day celebrations of Papua New Guinea, the Indian Navy Band, embarked on Indian Naval Ship Kadmatt, participated in the grand Military Tattoo at Port Moresby.

4. In Jammu and Kashmir, two terrorists were killed by the security forces in an encounter in the Guddar forest area in Kulgam district. An Army spokesperson said, a Junior Commissioned Officer of Army also suffered injuries in the gunfight.

5. India is embarking on an ambitious plan to expand its defence satellite constellation from the current 12 operational platforms to 78 by 2031, marking one of the most significant leaps in its military space capabilities.

6. India has finalised a landmark defence agreement with the United States for the acquisition of fifth-generation aircraft engine technology, a deal valued at approximately ₹14,000 crore, which crucially includes an unprecedented 80 percent technology transfer to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
