Historical accounts of Panaji date back to Kadamba King Shasthadeva, it refers to Panajim as Pahajani Khali, which mean a boat and a small creek respectively, in Sanskrit.

Another interpretation of the name is that Panji or Ponji is said to mean the land that never gets flooded The name was later changed to Panjim by the Portuguwhen Old Goa collapsed in the 19th century, Panjim was elevated to the status of a city on 22 March 1843 . After Liberation in 1961 it was known as Panaji.

Polala Amavasya
According to the Hindu legends, Goddess Poleramma or Goddess Pochamma is considered to be protector or guardian of children, and married women therefore keep the Polala Amavasya vratam for the wellness and longevity of their children. Polala Amavasya is also referred as Pithori Amavasya.
Polala Amavasya is majorly a festival observed in South India, particularly in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and adjoining areas. It is celebrated with immense devotion and enthusiasm. The observance of Polala Amavasya is very much similar to ‘Shital Sasthi’ in Orissa and ‘Sheetal Saptami’ puja in the northern states of India. Goddess Poleramma is considered to be the local deity who protects children from all evils and mishaps. She is believed to be one of main incarnation of Goddess Shakti or Durga.
On this day, farmers rest their bulls, decorating them with colorful paint and flowers, and offering prayers. Farmers treat these bulls as sacred Nandi, the bull of Lord Shiva, giving them a day of rest and thanks for their hard work.
