Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina thumped 2018 runners-up Croatia 3-0 to set up a World Cup final against either France or Morocco. Two goals from Julian Alvarez and one from Lionel Messi guided Argentina to a 3-0 win over Croatia in the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Lusail Stadium on Wednesday.
It will be Messi’s second World Cup final — Argentina lost the other one to Germany in 2014 — in what might be his last appearance at the tournament. It could yet be the perfect way to go out for a player widely regarded as one of the game’s best players, if not the best.
Messi equalled Lothar Matthaus’ record for featuring in most men’s World Cup matches (25). Messi also became Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history (11 goals).
