Son of Sardaar 2 box office collection day 7: Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur starrer witnesses decline, fetches ₹32 crore in first week

Son of Sardaar 2

Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur’s long-awaited action-comedy Son of Sardaar 2 has finished its opening week at the box office, but the momentum of the film is seen to be fading. Following a hopeful opening weekend based on fan base and holiday audiences, the weekday prospects of the movie have been declining steadily. Despite this slump, the movie was able to breach the ₹32 crore figure during its first week of release.

Strong beginning, slow decline

The movie had a good opening with around ₹9.5 crore on day one and marginal increases on days two and three with collections touching around ₹21 crore on the weekend. However, as Monday came around, the theaters started emptying. On day 4, the movie raked in about ₹3 crore, which fell to ₹2.2 crore on Tuesday. By Thursday, Son of Sardaar 2 had raked in a moderate ₹1.8 crore, taking its total to just over ₹32 crore.

Mixed word-of-mouth and tough competition

Industry insiders opine the film’s decline is because of mixed word of mouth and lukewarm consumer response. Though the film was enjoyed for the action moments and comedy timing — the most notable being Ajay Devgn’s return to playing the larger-than-life character — consumers felt that the plot was not fresh. The nostalgia factor attracted fans of the original Son of Sardaar, but the momentum did not get carried forward during the weekdays.

Adding to its challenges, the film has been facing stiff competition from other big releases like Saiyaara and Kingdom, both of which continue to perform strongly in urban and multiplex circuits.

Can it pick up again?

As the weekend draws near, trade observers are waiting in anticipation to know if the movie will recover and rake in some additional crores from its total. The performance of the second weekend will be the key factor in deciding whether the movie will hit the ₹50 crore mark or if it will wrap up with an average box office label.

What’s in store for the cast?

Ajay Devgn is already getting ready for his next major release towards the end of this year — a political thriller based on the backdrop of the 1990s. While Mrunal Thakur keeps wowing us with her variety of script selections, she too has several projects waiting, among them a romantic drama and a web series.

At present, Son of Sardaar 2 is a good but not great outing, providing some laughs and action, but failing to capture the magic of the original.
