In a stunning incident of vandalism, anonymous troublemakers fired gunshots at the statue of deceased Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, which stands outside his memorial in Mansa, Punjab. The incident occurred late one night, and bullet holes were observed on the statue’s face and chest region the following morning. The statue, placed to pay tribute to the memory of the well-known singer-turned-politician, now visibly lies in damaged condition, eliciting outrage and sorrow from fans and the public.
Family shocked, mother breaks silence
Moosewala’s mother, Charan Kaur, was shocked to the core by the incident, terming it a deliberate act to insult the reputation of her son. Addressing the media, she stated, “This isn’t damage to a statue; it’s an attack on the soul of Sidhu”. “They have no humanity.” The late mother, who has been a strong advocate for justice for her son since his murder in 2022, called on the authorities to act fast and bring the perpetrators to book.
Police investigation in progress
Police officials reached the spot in the early hours of the morning after the locals reported it. Forensic experts were also summoned to collect bullet shells and CCTV footage at the spot. Mansa police confirmed that an FIR has been lodged, and various aspects, including the motive of gang rivalry or personal hatred, are being investigated. “We are taking this very seriously,” a senior police officer said.
Political responses pour in
Political leaders from across parties denounced the act. Most expressed doubts about the state of law and order in Punjab and asked for greater security for public monuments, particularly those that have turned into emotional landmarks for the young population. AAP and Congress leaders, along with Punjabi celebrities, made their displeasure known on social media.
Public outrage and tributes
Supporters made their way to the memorial in huge numbers, dropping flowers and candles at the bottom of the broken statue. Most flooded social media with the hashtag #JusticeForMoosewala, demanding swift action and justice. The singer, who became a huge hit for his aggressive lyrics and fearless attitude, is still a cultural icon despite his premature death.
Statue to be restored soon
The local government assured the family that the statute would be restored and secured. Further security measures are currently in the pipeline to make sure that such incidents do not occur again. In the meantime, Moosewala’s memory lives on through his songs, while his family and followers demand action against this new
act of disrespect.
