Who decides the level of security or protection an individual needs?

In the case of the Centre, it is the Ministry of Home Affairs that decides the level of security and at the state level, it is decided by the State government. The decision is made by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) or the State government as the case may be based on the inputs and information received from the intelligence agencies.

These intelligence agencies are different both at the center and state levels. At the center, it is the RAW- Research and Analysis Wing and Intelligence Bureau. And at the State level, it is the state intelligence department operating.

Levels of security in India:

There are six levels of protection: X, Y, Y+, Z, Z+, and SPG.

➢ The X category of security entails one gunman for the protection of the individual.
➢ The Y category has one gunman for mobile security and one for static plus four for rotation.
➢ The Z category has two policemen (plus four on rotation) for mobile security and one (plus four on rotation) for residence security.
➢ The Z+ category has six gunmen for mobile security and two (plus eight) for residence security.
➢ There are around 3000 personnel active in the SPG.SPG is only meant for the Prime Minister and his immediate family.
