A midair brawl on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata has resulted in the airline placing a travel ban on a male passenger who allegedly slapped a fellow traveler on board. The event unfolded on flight 6E-6129, causing panic among other travelers and leading to an intervention by the crew to defuse the situation. IndiGo confirmed the development, saying that the passenger’s actions were “unacceptable” and went against aviation safety guidelines.
Dispute turns physical over seat adjustment
The issue started when a passenger reclined his seat on board the aircraft, something the man sitting behind him objected to. There were heated exchanges of words, and before the crew could intervene, one of the men allegedly slapped the other. The whole ordeal was recorded by an onlooker passenger on camera and later shared on social media, with people denouncing it and questioning in-flight etiquette and safety.
IndiGo takes stern action
Reacting, IndiGo issued a formal statement announcing that the passenger who was involved in the physical abuse has been added to the no-fly list of the airline, as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms. The airline once again emphasized its policy of zero tolerance towards the misbehavior of passengers on board, and added that such an incident is taken seriously to maintain the safety of the passengers.
The flight was not diverted.
Even though the disruption occurred, the flight otherwise completed its journey without diversion and landed in Kolkata on time. After landing, airport officials were notified and the issue was transferred to security staff for investigation. The victim passenger allegedly did not want to make an official complaint, but the airline still proceeded with the internal disciplinary action.
The DGCA can take further action.
A senior DGCA official stated the regulator is examining the incident and can suggest additional sanctions based on the passenger’s travel history and the seriousness of the behavior. Indian civil aviation regulations permit up to a lifetime ban for passengers who are deemed to be serious safety risks on board.
Increasing concern about in-flight incidents
The incident joins a lengthening list of out-of-control passenger conduct on domestic and foreign flights. Experts opine airlines must implement tougher pre-boarding screening and promote more awareness of what is acceptable behavior during flights. The latest incident has sparked renewed debate regarding whether airline crew should be empowered to quash midair fights more quickly.
