Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri’s much-awaited romantic drama Dhadak 2 had a subdued opening at the box office on its first day. According to early estimates, the film managed to collect ₹4.75 crore across India, falling short of industry predictions and failing to surpass the opening figures of Siddhant’s previous action film Yudhra, which had earned over ₹5.6 crore on day one.
Occupancy below average for a Friday release
Even with a broad release on more than 2,500 screens and reasonable pre-release publicity, Dhadak 2 saw less-than-average occupancy during the morning and day shows. Footfall increased slightly during the evening shows, but not sufficiently to make much of a difference. Trade analysts pointed out that the movie could not attract the youth audience that had flocked to watch romantic dramas in the past.
Mixed reviews affect footfall
Part of the explanation for the lackluster performance could be the varied to negative words from critics and viewers. While a few appreciated the chemistry between Triptii and Siddhant, a few described the screenplay as poor and the story as too slow. The comparisons with Dhadak (2018), which had Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, also did not help, as many described the sequel as a “less powerful” reworking.
Competition and genre fatigue
The other reason for the slow opening of the film is the tough competition at the box office. Some big releases from various genres, like action thrillers and comedies, are already running in cinemas, leaving lesser space for Dhadak 2 to leave its impression. Additionally, the genre of dark romantic tragedies appears to be suffering from fatigue among viewers, particularly in urban areas.
Word of mouth gives hope
Despite the disappointing opening, the producers are optimistic that good word of mouth from core audiences can salvage Dhadak 2 over the weekend. The fate of the film commercially over the next two days will be critical. Sunday collections will particularly tell us if they will be able to hold on or dwindle rapidly from theaters.
Industry expectations
Experts feel that Dhadak 2 would have to hold well over the weekend and potentially reach near ₹20 crore by Sunday to remain in the competition. Anything short of that could make recovery tough, given the estimated ₹45 crore budget of the film.
