Climate Change Performance Index

Climate Change Performance

Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) is released by the Germanwatch, which is an independent organization. It uses a standardized framework and compares the climate performance of the 59 countries along with the EU. They all together account for 92% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

CCPI is used as an instrument by different nations to formulate environmental policies at national and international forums and also design action plans as per the need and the data available. The climate protection performance is determined in four categories:

  1. GHG Emissions
  2. Renewable Energy
  3. Energy Use
  4. Climate Policy

IndiaтАЩs Performance:

In 2021 and 2022, India stands in the 10th spot. In 2020, India stood 9th on the list. When it comes to detailed categorization, India ranks 9th in Greenhouse Gas Emissions, 24th in renewable energy, and 9th in energy use.

Global Performance:

No country was found fit for the first, second, and third ranks on the index. Denmark was ranked 4th with a score of 79.61% followed by Sweden with 73.28 scores. India scored 67.35 points. The UK was ranked 11th, Germany 16th, the US 51st, and China 52nd rank.

Takeaways:

India should adopt a carbon pricing mechanism and develop more strategies and capacities at the subnational level to improve its performance in CCPI. India should come up with a concrete action plan to meet the targets.
