Ahead of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, the Indian Army has initiated a moving countrywide campaign to salute the families of martyred soldiers who gave up their lives in the 1999 Kargil War. Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General M.V. Suchindra Kumar initiated this moving outreach by deploying teams of officers and troops to the homes of the martyred heroes.
As part of the program, Indian Army soldiers are sitting down with the relatives of 545 martyrs in 25 states, two Union Territories, and even Nepal. These visits involve delivering gratitude letters, special gifts, and welfare details explaining facilities extended by both the central and state governments. The initiative is to convey the Army’s ongoing identification with the kin of those who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the country.
In some of these areas, these visits were moments of profound remembrance. In Assam, troops went to the residence of Rifleman Nyima Tashi and sat with his mother, Nyima Chozom, paying a gesture of respect and solidarity. On one of the visits, the Army team paid tribute to the family of Captain Jintu Gogoi, who succumbed in the Batalik sector, which was part of the 17 Garhwal Rifles.
The gesture was taken to Gujarat as well, where soldiers paid a visit to the family of Sepoy S.K. Kavaji in Sabarkantha. Kavaji, who was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal for valor, was remembered with dignity as his widow was presented with tokens of appreciation and an official letter of appreciation.
In Noida, the parents of Captain Vijayant Thapar, one of the country’s most renowned martyrs of the Kargil War, invited Army officials home. His father, Colonel (Retd.) V.N. Thapar, was greatly touched by the gesture and hailed the efforts of the Army to continue paying tribute to their son’s memory.
This visit is part of an overarching programme that will end with a grand commemoration ceremony at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, on July 26. The initiative does not just honor those who served and died but also sees to it that their memory continues to motivate generations. By engaging directly with families, the Army reiterates its message: the country has not forgotten.
