After the gruesome killing of tennis prodigy Radhika Yadav, one of her closest friends has emerged to denounce harsh online responses that appear to justify the terrible act. In an emotional Facebook video, Himaanshika Singh Rajput said she was taken aback reading reactions that advocated on behalf of Radhika’s father, who was alleged to have shot her dead at their residence in Gurugram. Himaanshika was shocked that people were exclaiming “he did the right thing” or finding fault with Radhika for the choices she had made.
The legacy of control and segregation
She also revealed that Radhika had suffered long-term emotional manipulation and abuse at the hands of her parents. Her parents did not allow Radhika to dress according to her wishes, talk to her male friends, or even have a normal social life, as uncovered by Himaanshika. The victim was reportedly kept on close monitor and often guilt-tripped over wanting independence, especially after she began working and contributing to the family economically.
Himaanshika also denounced the wave of social media well-wishers defending Radhika’s murder as proof of deep-rooted misogyny and chilling societal values. “Men rallying for men have to stop,” she posted in her entry, going on to say that it is not acceptable to justify a father’s abusive behavior because of honor or culture. She asked people to focus on convicting culprits rather than blaming victims for being their own person.
A call for justice and a call for awareness
Whereas the majority online had sympathy with Radhika and condemned the act, the trend of justifying domestic violence surprised many. Himaanshika was of the view that this tragedy ought to awaken the nation to realize how controlling behavior at home can escalate into irreversible violence. She promised to keep fighting for her late friend and raising awareness of gender-based oppression.
The case so far
Radhika Yadav, 25 and a young star of Indian tennis, was allegedly killed by her father on 10 July. He was angry, reports say, with her lifestyle, autonomy, and growing success. He was taken into custody after the murder and remains in police custody. The crime has sparked a national argument over the intersection of gender, control, and family honor.
