In the past few years, sleeper hits like ’12th Fail’, ‘Munjya’, ‘Laapataa Ladies,’ ‘Badhaai Ho’, ‘Andhadhun’, and many others have proven one point emphatically. That box-office success is to just limited big-budget multistarrers. As veteran producer Anand Pandit puts it, “It would be safe to say that the market is increasingly story-obsessed now. Even in big-screen extravaganzas, the audience expects thematic coherence, strong performances and compelling storytelling.”
The failure of big-budget star vehicles has shown indisputably that there is a need for fresh perspectives, says Pandit and adds, “Smaller films are blazing a new trail by presenting smartly budgeted, well-told stories. Audiences today are very well-versed with quality writing and the tenets of a good script. They can’t be won over by formulaic and tired storytelling.”
Pandit points out that OTT streamers have opened up the world of entertainment and mediocrity no longer passes muster. “Post the pandemic, there is a growing demand for unique, well-written content and cinema must also offer unexplored genres and transcendent human stories to bring audiences back to theatres,” he adds.
The advent of streaming platforms has also helped bridge linguistic barriers, with movies in regional languages now getting a pan-Indian release. “When we talk about regional films, there are big ventures like ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ from Telugu, and also smaller-budget movies like ‘Premalu’ from Malayalam, which became a huge success in other languages. So, if the theme is fresh and the content is genuine, films can reach a wider audience, which is a good sign, “concludes Pandit, who is presenting the upcoming Kannada movie ‘Father,’ produced by RC Studios.
