A violent incident occurred at a Muharram procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain when a ceremonial horse, also said to have been driven through a barricaded police area, injured several police officers. The procession, which was being undertaken in a very sensitive zone, had strayed from the pre-certified route and was trying to force its way through restricted access points.
Horse Crashes Barricade, Officers Caught Off Guard
When the procession group reached the barricade at the site of the Khajurwadi Masjid, they allegedly employed a horse to drive through the metal barriers. The shock caused the barricades to collapse, injuring five police officers who were posted to control the crowd. Among the injured were an assistant sub-inspector and four constables. All the injured staff were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Crowd Dispersed After Police Intervention
As a reaction to the unexpected violation and increasing tension, mild force was unleashed by the police in order to reclaim the situation. A lathi charge was used in order to break up the crowd and cease further escalation. The horse, which was utilized in the disruption, was left behind at the scene by participants in the procession.
FIR Registered, Organizers Among the Accused
The police have filed a case on serious charges such as rioting, obstructing a public officer, and unlawful assembly. At least 16 people, including procession organizers, have been identified and booked for their role in the melee, according to officials. CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts are being investigated.
Processions Continue Smoothly Elsewhere
Even despite the Ujjain incident, there was no violence during the Muharram processions in other Madhya Pradesh cities like Bhopal and Indore. The participants remembered Imam Hussain with traditional expressions such as Tazias and symbolic gestures of grief.
