Odisha CM Acts Quickly After Puri Stampede During Jagannath Yatra; Two Top Cops Suspended

Puri Rath Yatra stampede

Following a deadly stampede during the annual Jagannath Yatra in Puri, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who took office recently, suspended two high-ranking police officers and made a sincere public apology.

Chaos at a Sacred Celebration

The stampede took place on a day of religious festivities, with thousands of followers converging on Puri for the legendary Ratha Yatra. Hundreds of people surged around the Gundicha temple, resulting in a fatal crush that killed at least three people and left dozens injured. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos as narrow streets, encroachments, and inadequate crowd management transformed the vicinity into a dangerous crush.

Accountability from the Top

Reacting quickly, CM Majhi suspended Puri’s Deputy Commissioner of Police and a senior commandant, citing negligence in handling the massive crowd. Additionally, the district collector and superintendent of police were transferred, as the state government launched a review of the arrangements that failed to prevent the disaster.

Majhi, who had just come to power, was sorry when the incident happened and took moral responsibility. I apologize to the people of Odisha and to the devotees of Lord Jagannath. “This tragedy should never have occurred,” he said in a statement. He also promised that initiatives are underway so that there would be proper crowd management at future festivals.

Political Heat and Public Reaction

Opposition parties, such as the BJD and Congress, vehemently criticized the government, accusing the administration of poor planning and failure to prepare. Former CM Naveen Patnaik also raised his voice, terming the incident “avoidable” had some basic safety measures been adhered to.

Support for Victims

The state has offered compensation to the families of the victims and promised medical assistance for those who were hurt. Emergency response teams are on the ground, and a comprehensive inquiry has been initiated to ascertain exactly how the stampede took place.

The Odisha state government’s swift response, suspending top officials and ordering an investigation into the incident, shows a stern attitude towards accountability. But with faith in the government dented and pressure building on politicians, CM Majhi now has the task of regaining faith in the state’s capacity to handle one of India’s most important religious events.
