In the face of increasing tensions between Israel and Iran, the government of India has initiated Operation Sindhu, a special operation to evacuate Indian citizens—particularly students— trapped in the conflict area. The operation commenced on June 18 officially, with the objective of securing the safety of Indian citizens in danger-prone regions of Iran.
110 Students Evacuated in First Phase
In the first phase of the operation, 110 Indian students, the majority from Urmia Medical University in northern Iran, were escorted safely over the border to Armenia on a road journey. From Yerevan, they were flown out on a special flight organized by the Indian government to New Delhi, which arrived in the early hours of June 19.
Embassy Coordination and Support
The Indian Embassy in Tehran organized the ground movement of the students, while the Yerevan Embassy organized their airlift. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed gratitude to Iranian and Armenian authorities for their support in making the operation safe and smooth.
Safety Measures and Advisories
As part of the overall efforts, Indian nationals already in Iran—particularly those in or around Tehran—have been told to exit the area if they can. Other assistance includes:
24×7 emergency hotline made operational in New Delhi
Round-the-clock communication by Indian embassies
Travel alerts and information disseminated through official channels
Citizens are also encouraged to register with the embassy so that they can be updated and assisted in case of emergency evacuations.
Next Steps in Operation Sindhu
The evacuation operation continues. Some other Indian students and professionals are still in various locations in Iran, including some from states such as Karnataka, who have sought the help of the government. Further coordinated evacuations are to be conducted in the days ahead, based on the situation on the ground and diplomatic planning.
Operation Sindhu is India’s swift and concerted reaction to a massive unfolding global crisis. By integrating diplomatic efforts, logistical preparation, and relief services, the government is working to bring back each Indian national stranded in the conflict-ridden area of Iran safely.
