INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. The rotational presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been handed over to India in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Delhi will hold the presidency of the grouping for a year until September 2023. And next year, India will host the SCO summit.

2. India and Egypt have agreed to identify proposals for expanding cooperation between the defence industries of the two countries in a time-bound manner.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with his Egyptian counterpart General Mohamed Zaki in Cairo.

3. The first India-UAE-France trilateral ministerial meet was held in New York on Monday. After meeting UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and French Minister Catherine Colonna, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the meeting was an “active exchange of ideas between strategic partners”. Jaishankar is presently in New York to attend a UN General Assembly session.

4. Two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp has partnered with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to establish charging infrastructure for EVs in India.

7. National Human Rights Commission of India chairperson justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra has been elected as a member of the Governance Committee of the Asia Pacific Forum (APF).

He has also been elected as a member of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Bureau at the 27th Annual General Meeting of the APF.

1. 77th UN General Assembly on Tuesday to take decisive action to end the spiralling global hunger crisis, over 200 civil society organisations from 75 countries have signed an open letter expressing outrage at skyrocketing hunger levels and recommendations for immediate action.

2. Typhoon Nanmadol killed at least four people and injured more than 100 others after one of the biggest storms in recent decades made landfall on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan on Sunday morning.

3. A US Navy warship and a Canadian frigate sailed through the Taiwan Strait as part of a routine transit on Tuesday.

4. Germany’s gas storage facilities are more than 90% full, said European energy data platform Aggregated Gas Storage Inventory (AGSI).

5. China and UAE to join hands on moon rover missions. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) of the UAE and the China National Space Agency (CNSA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to work together on the UAE’s moon missions.

6. Every year, the full week ending on the last Sunday of September is observed as the International Week of the Deaf (IWD). In 2022, IWD is being observed from September 19 to 25 September 2022. The theme of the 2022 International Week of Deaf People is “Building Inclusive Communities for All”.
