“It’s all a question of imagination. Our responsibility begins with the power to imagine.”

Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer. He has authored more than 21 books in his writing career of 25 years. He has also written many essays and short stories which have been loved and admired by readers worldwide.

His works have been translated into 50 different languages and sold millions of copies internationally. He is a very popular writer because he adopts a unique writing style for every piece of writing. He is best known for his magical realism elements.

He has won numerous literary awards like the Gunzou Prize for New Writers, the World Fantasy Award, the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the Franz Kafka Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize.

And the interesting thing to pay attention here is that he believes that extraordinary works can be achieved by perseverance and consistency. This is what he said in The Paris Review, Summer 2004:

“When I’m in writing mode for a novel, I get up at 4:00 am and work for five to six hours. In the afternoon, I run for 10km or swim for 1500m (or do both), then I read a bit and listen to some music. I go to bed at 9:00 pm. I keep to this routine every day without variation. The repetition itself becomes the important thing; it’s a form of mesmerism. I mesmerize myself to reach a deeper state of mind. But to hold to such repetition for so long — six months to a year — requires a good amount of mental and physical strength. In that sense, writing a long novel is like survival training. Physical strength is as necessary as artistic sensitivity.”
