Specific Purpose

Specific Purpose

“I believe purpose is something for which one is responsible; it’s not just divinely assigned.”
– Michael J. Fox

Scrambling among the edges of life and death, career and unemployment, love and solitude, religion and spirituality, we often get lost in its maze and forget the sound we are born with- the sound of the soul, the song of our soul. There is peace in it, antique tranquility that is rare to find. And knowing it is like knowing ourselves.

We are here on this earth for a purpose. Each one of us as a soul has a specific purpose to fulfill, a specific task to accomplish. May it be rearing a good child, planting trees, awakening spirituality, rekindling love and peace as a therapist, treating patients as doctors, growing food as farmers, or creating art that inspires the masses.

Our purpose is to leave the earth better than we received ourselves. As learned from textbooks, “We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrowed it from our descendants.”

We are here on this earth temporarily. We are the children of mother earth who is graciously providing us clean water, pure air, fertile soil, blazing fire, and an unending sky. Once we reach a certain age, it is our turn to start giving back. We owe this to each other and our peaceful existence.

Have you heard of the Jadav Molai Payeng? He is also known as the “Forest man of India”. For decades, he has dedicated himself to planting trees and tending forests on a sandbar near the riverside of Brahmaputra. In fact, he planted an entire forest in an area that was thought of as barren by others.

Similar is the story of the forest woman of India- Kollakkayil Devaki Amma, born in 1934. She is an Indian woman who began to grow a forest after she could not bear children of her own. Villagers tormented her and her husband and mocked them. But now, the forest that she sows covers an area of 4.5 acres and has over 3,000 trees. She has received several awards for her work toward the environment, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar.

So, no matter where we are, or how much we have, we can begin now to give and live the life of joy, peace, and abundance we are all destined for. We can’t always be on the receiving end, we have to give back. It is our responsibility to ourselves and a way to pay respect to our existence.
