PM Modi launches first ever Chess Olympiad torch relay

1. PM Modi launched the historic torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi on 19 June.

2. Hockey: After defeating world no.2 Argentina by 2-1 in the shootout, in the first leg, Indian Women’s Hockey team conceded a 2-3 defeat against same team in the second & final leg of FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 tie in Rotterdam, Netherlands. India will next face USA on June 21 and 22.

3. The five-match T20I series between India and South Africa ended in a 2-2 draw after the decider got abandoned due to rain in Bengaluru. The fifth T20I was initially reduced to 19 overs per side. The rain then stopped play when India were batting at 28/2 after 3.3 overs. India are now unbeaten in nine straight T20I series at home

4. Sri Lanka’s 24-year-old opener Pathum Nissanka has broken the record for scoring the highest score by a Sri Lanka batter against Australia in men’s ODIs. Nissanka slammed 137(147) in the third ODI against Australia in Colombo on Sunday. The previous record was set by Sanath Jayasuriya on January 9, 2003, when he slammed 122(105) in Sydney.

5. World number one Viktor Axelsen won Indonesia Open for the second consecutive year after defeating China’s Zhao Jun Peng 21-9, 21-10 on Sunday.

6. Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina said she “doesn’t support” United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) decision to allow Russian and Belarusian players to compete at 2022 US Open. she added. Russian and Belarusian players are banned from competing at Wimbledon but they are allowed to play under a neutral flag in New York.
