Printed Rainbow (2006) by Gitanjali Rao

An old woman lives in a little flat and uses her collection of matchboxes to dream away to more adventurous lives.

This week’s featured short film is an early work of animation director Gitanjali Rao, whose first feature-length film ‘Bombay Rose’ is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

In ‘Printed Rainbow’, you will find a poetic, gentle storytelling style that pushes you to observe and imagine more than is visible on the screen. The soundscape is rich enough to not feel the need for any spoken dialogue. The contrast between the protagonist’s ‘grey’ reality and a vibrant world of daydreaming lends the film a playful tone, making the film’s ending feel just right.

Watch for yourself and let us know what you think.
