1. India has recorded the “highest ever” annual FDI (foreign direct investment) inflow of USD 83.57 billion in 2021-22, the commerce and industry ministry said

2. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will transfer Rs 30,307 crore as surplus to the govt for 2021-22, The central bank said in a statement following its board meeting on 20 May.

The decision was taken after deciding to maintain the contingency risk buffer at 5.50% of its balance sheet.

3. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to ride-hailing companies Ola and Uber for alleged unfair trade practices and violation of consumer rights.

4. Delhi government on Friday raised the dearness allowance (DA) for labourers amid rising inflation. With this, the monthly wages for unskilled labourers have been raised from ₹16,064 to ₹16,506 and semi-skilled labourers’ wages have been increased from ₹17,693 to ₹18,187 per month.

5.UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty have been included in The Sunday Times Rich List of the UK’s wealthiest 250 people for the first time. The couple has ranked 222nd on the list with a combined fortune of £730 million. Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys Founder NR Narayana Murthy, owns about 0.9% stake in Infosys.

ENTERTAINMENT:

1. Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea was released from a Mumbai jail on Friday, almost seven years after being arrested in her daughter Sheena Bora’s murder case in 2015.

2. Hollywood actor Jeremy Renner, best known for portraying Hawkeye in Marvel films, recently finished shooting for his upcoming project in India.

3. Greek composer Vangelis, who won Oscars for the music of ‘Chariots of Fire’ and ‘Blade Runner’, died aged 79 on Tuesday. As per reports, Vangelis died in a hospital in France where he was being treated for COVID-19.

DEFENCE:

1. The Border Road Organisation (BRO) conducted a final breakthrough blast on 20 May to mark the successful completion of excavation work of Arunachal Pradesh’s Nechiphu Tunnel. The blast was remotely conducted by the director general of BRO, Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry from Delhi.

2. NO MORE IMPORTED COLD WEATHER GEAR: INDIAN START-UP’S SOLUTION FOR ARMY

(a). Extreme Cold-Weather Clothing Systems (ECWCS) is a three-layer modular clothing system meant to keep the body warm in temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius when worn simultaneously. Soldiers wear it in high-altitude environments, including the world’s highest battleground, the Siachen Glacier.

(b). Armed with indigenous clothing systems developed by AROO, India’s first military start-up specialising in defence apparel, soldiers are no longer reliant on imports for ECWCS.

3. DRDO chairman Dr G. Satheesh Reddy invited the private sector to tap opportunities in the defence sector as the government aims to indigenise several defence items.

4. The Navy recently tested an indigenous Naval Anti-Ship Missile (Short Range) or NASM-SR from a Sea King helicopter at the Integrated Test Range in Balasore, Odisha.

The NASM-SR has a range of 55 km and weighs 385 kg. This missile will replace the Sea Eagle missiles which are currently in use with the Navy. With the Sea King helicopters too being phased out, it is expected that the NASM-SR will be used with the new MH-60R multi-role helicopters, which are being inducted into the Navy.

The NASM-SR carries a warhead of 100 kg and has sub-sonic capabilities, which means that it flies below the speed of sound at 0.8 Mach.

5. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that now India is among the top 25 countries exporting in the defence sector.
