Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has defended the state’s decision to use the Tamil letter for ‘ru’ instead of the official rupee symbol in its 2025-26 budget, highlighting that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had previously used the Tamil letter ‘Ru’ (rubai in Tamil) rather than ‘Re’ in English.
9. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has launched two key initiatives — Sashakt Panchayat-Netri Abhiyan and Model Women-Friendly Gram Panchayats (MWFGP) — to promote gender-sensitive governance and empower Women Elected Representatives (WERs) in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).

1. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized a consignment of methamphetamine tablets worth 88 crore rupees and arrested four members of an international drug cartel in the Imphal and Guwahati zones.
2. The Union home ministry has introduced a comprehensive Immigration and Foreigners Bill in the Lok Sabha, aiming to overhaul the existing framework governing the entry, stay, and exit of foreigners in India. The Bill, which will replace four outdated laws — the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920; the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939; the Foreigners Act, 1946; and the Immigration (Carriers’ Liability) Act, 2000 — includes stringent penalties for using forged travel documents.
Under the new legislation, anyone found using a forged or fraudulently obtained passport or visa for entering, staying in, or exiting India could face imprisonment ranging from a minimum of two years to a maximum of seven years, along with a fine between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10 lakh.
3. In Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra: Security around Aurangzeb’s tomb has been tightened following threats to vandalize it. SRP units and senior police officers are deployed for 24/7 monitoring. Checkpoints and fixed security points have been set up, with strict checks on visitors.
The tomb, a protected site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is at the center of a growing political and communal controversy. Bajrang Dal’s Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Goa convenor Vivek Kulkarni has openly declared that the structure will face the same fate as the Babri Masjid.

1. Two mega defence deals with France — for 26 Rafale-M fighter jets and three more Scorpene-class conventional submarines — worth close to $11 billion are now awaiting final approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) before their anticipated conclusion very soon.
2. China has delivered a second new submarine, equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, to Pakistan as part of its efforts to beef up the navy of its all-weather ally to back its growing presence in the Arabian Sea and in the Indian Ocean.
3. The 14th meeting of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) Experts Working Group (EWG) on Counter-Terrorism will be held in New Delhi on 19th and 20th of March. India and Malaysia will co-chair the two-day meeting.
4. The India-Bangladesh Naval Exercise Bongosagar 2025 took place in March 2025 in the Bay of Bengal. This event marked step in strengthening the bilateral military relationship between India and Bangladesh. The exercise aimed to enhance maritime security through collaborative operations.
