A top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has sharply denounced the United States’ suggestion of a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine as a tactics-based move to gain an advantage over Kyiv. The Kremlin’s response comes against the backdrop of continuing hostilities and diplomatic tensions between Russia and the West.
US Ceasefire Plan Rejected by Russia
Putin’s close adviser Yuri Ushakov rejected the US-sponsored ceasefire proposal, saying that it was not a genuine effort to bring peace but a “strategic ploy” to grant Ukraine a tactical edge. Such a lull in hostilities, Ushakov said, would enable Ukrainian troops to regroup, take new military supplies from Western partners, and bolster their defenses.
“This so-called ceasefire is a ploy to buy time for Russia’s advancement on the battlefield,” Ushakov declared. “The US and its allies do not care about peace but are in a mood to extend the war for their geopolitical stakes.”
Russia’s Increasing Skepticism about Western Mediation
The Russian government has been constantly skeptical of Western countries, especially the US, when it comes to peace talks. According to Moscow, past ceasefire talks only served to deliver more arms to Ukraine, pushing the war further rather than ending it.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov reiterated Ushakov’s words, reiterating that Russia would only agree to any short-term ceasefire if it resulted in “meaningful and lasting security guarantees” for Russia-held parts of Ukraine.
Ukraine Hails Ceasefire, But Remains Suspicious of Russia
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities have greeted the prospect of a ceasefire but remain doubtful about whether Russia will be willing to abide by it. The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that any cessation of hostilities should be accompanied by guarantees that Russia will not use it to regroup its troops and conduct new attacks.
“Russia has a track record of breaking ceasefires,” a Ukrainian government official stated. “We won’t be misled into allowing them to gain time to fuel their war.”
International Reactions and Future Outlook
As the US and its NATO allies insist on a negotiated ceasefire, Russia stands firm that any ceasefire has to be in keeping with its own security agenda. The inability to agree could lead to a protracted war with more devastation and humanitarian crises.
While diplomatic efforts go on, all eyes are fixed on Moscow and Washington to see whether there will be any breakthrough or whether there will be more escalation of conflict in the coming weeks.
