Inaugural IIS Haryana Dangal Championship concludes with spectacular show of wrestling talent

Hisar, Haryana, 26th February 2025: The Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) successfully wrapped up the first-ever Haryana Dangal Championship, held at the Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra Multipurpose Hall, Giri Centre, Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar, on 19th and 20th February 2025. Over the course of the two days, more than 250 matches were contested across various categories, making the event a resounding success.

The championship brought together wrestlers from all districts of Haryana, with participants battling it out in Freestyle, Women’s Wrestling, and Greco-Roman divisions. Weight categories included:

Women’s Wrestling: 53kg, 68kg, and above
Men’s Wrestling: 57kg, 65kg, 74kg, and above
The tournament was graced by the presence of Mrs. Savitri Jindal, Chairperson of the OP Jindal Group, who attended as the guest of honour. Her support, along with that of the Jindal Group and IIS, highlighted the commitment to nurturing wrestling talent in Haryana and promoting the sport across India.

One of the highlights of the tournament was the electrifying performance by IIS athlete Antim Panghal, India’s first-ever U-20 World Wrestling Champion and Paris Olympics participant, who triumphed in the women’s 53kg freestyle category. Reflecting on her win, Antim said, “It’s an honour to compete in my home state and be part of such a prestigious event. Wrestling in Haryana is not just a sport, it’s a way of life, and to see so many talented wrestlers competing at such a high level makes me incredibly proud. The atmosphere in the arena was electric, and every match was a battle of skill, strength, and determination.”

“I hope that my performance in the tournament can inspire budding athletes to chase their dreams. The support we receive from platforms like IIS is invaluable for our growth, and I believe this tournament will create a lasting impact by fostering new talent and keeping the rich tradition of wrestling in Haryana alive. I look forward to seeing the next generation of wrestlers rise to even greater heights,” she added.

Notably, numerous other IIS athletes such as Sumit Malik (freestyle), Parvinder Navin (freestyle), Sumit (Greco-Roman), Ravi (Greco-Roman), Deepak (Greco-Roman), Jyoti Suresh (Women’s Wrestling), Hanshika Lamba (Women’s Wrestling), Taniya Phougat (Women’s Wrestling), Kalpana (Women’s Wrestling), Kajal (Women’s Wrestling), and Harshita Mor (Women’s Wrestling) also delivered outstanding performances, adding to the excitement of the tournament.

The tournament featured thrilling matches across multiple weight categories. Here’s the full list of winners category wise:

FREESTYLE:

Gold Medallists: Sahil (57 kg), Sujeet (65 kg), Vishal Kaliraman (74 kg), Vicky Hooda (74+ kg).

Silver Medallists: Sumit Malik (57 kg), Sandeep Ranga (65 kg), Deepak (74 kg), Sachin (74+ kg).

Bronze Medallists: Nishant (57 kg), Aakash Kumar (57 kg), Ashwani (65 kg), Akash Dahiya (65 kg), Vijay (74 kg), Parvinder Nain (74 kg), Sachin (74+ kg), Aman (74+ kg), Pardeep Punia (74+ kg).

GRECO-ROMAN

Gold Medallists: Suraj (60 kg), Neeraj (67 kg), Sajan Bhanwala (77 kg), Sunil Kumar (77+ kg)

Silver Medallists: Sumit (60 kg), Vikas (67 kg), Surajmal (77 kg), Nitesh Siwach (77+ kg)

Bronze Medallists: Manish Kundu (60 kg), Ravi (60 kg), Vinay Rohaj (67 kg), Manjeet Gill (67 kg), Deepak (77 kg), Ankit Gulia (77 kg), Ajay Beniwal (77+ kg), Sidharth Saroha (77+ kg).

WOMEN’S WRESTLING

Gold Medallists: Antim Panghal (53 kg), Neha Sangwan (62 kg), Manshi Lather (68 kg), Kajal (68+ kg).

Silver Medallists: Jyoti Suresh (53 kg), Kalpana (62 kg), Kirti Kundu (68 kg), Harshita Mor (68+ kg).

Bronze Medallists: Hanshika Lamba (53 kg), Taniya Phougat (53 kg), Pushpa (62 kg), Priti (62 kg), Swati Beniwal (68 kg), Khushi (68 kg), Tanu Sharma (68+ kg), Dishun (68+ kg).

With wrestlers from across all districts of Haryana competing for the Rs 15 lakh prize pool, the championship became a true celebration of Haryana’s wrestling heritage. Winners in each weight category walked away with cash rewards, further motivating athletes to push their limits.

IIS President Manisha Malhotra shared her thoughts at the event’s conclusion and stated, “The inaugural IIS Haryana Dangal Championship has exceeded our expectations. We were delighted with the talent and determination on display, and this event has reaffirmed Haryana’s position as a wrestling hub in India.
