INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will firm up a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) today on 18 Feb during a virtual summit between PM Modi and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan.

2. Both leaders are likely to lay out their vision of the historic and friendly bilateral relations, at a time when UAE is marking 50th anniversary of its foundation and India is celebrating 75 years of its independence. Both the leaders will discuss bilateral cooperation and exchange views on international and regional issues of mutual interest

Trade Relations
UAE is currently India’s third-largest trading partner. It is also India’s second-largest export destination after the US. India was UAE’s second-largest trading partner in 2019. Furthermore, UAE is the eighth-largest investor in India. India’s major exports to the UAE include petroleum products, stones, minerals, precious metals, gems & jewellery, food items like sugar, cereals, tea, meat, fruits & vegetables, seafood, textiles etc. India imports crude petroleum, petroleum products, stones, minerals, precious metals, gems and jewellery, chemicals, wood and wood products.

3. Recently, India announced to extend its “SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) network” to neighbour countries, to fight against Covid-19. Key Facts INSACOG is a network of laboratories for genomic sequencing and surveillance. India will also work for the implementation of “TRIPS waiver”, that it co-sponsored with South Africa for diversifying its local manufacturing in regional markets.

4. External Affairs Ministry said India has been supportive of an immediate de-escalation of tensions between Ukraine and Russia and a resolution of the issue through sustained diplomatic dialogue.

5. The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said the hijab issue is an internal matter of India and that outsiders have no right to comment on internal issues and matters relating to India’s constitution and its people.

6. The US has hoped that India will stand by its side in case of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, which as per the Biden administration seems imminent with Moscow adding 7,000 troops to Ukraine’s border in recent days. There was a discussion on Russia and Ukraine during the recently concluded Quad ministerial in Melbourne that included foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

1. Microsoft Co-founder and the world’s fourth-richest person, Bill Gates, is on his first-ever visit to Pakistan. Gates on Thursday called on Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and was briefed about efforts to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and eradicate poliovirus from the country. The Pakistan PM also hosted a luncheon in honour of Bill Gates.

2. During an interview, Lithuanian Defence Chief Valdemaras Rupsys has said that Russia’s armed forces are positioned to attack Ukraine “at any moment”. Rupsys said, “The [Russian] army is positioned so it can begin an invasion at any moment, it just needs an attack order.” This comes after Russia claimed on Wednesday that its forces were withdrawing after exercises near Ukraine.

3. A 43-year-old pilot died after a two-engined Beechcraft Baron plane crashed into a truck on a highway in the US, the Federal Aviation Administration stated. A video of the crash site has surfaced online, showing the aircraft and the truck on fire after the collision. The driver of the truck trailer was taken to a hospital.

4. A Russian court imposed a fine of 3.5 million rubles (₹34.67 lakh) on Google for failing to delete content deemed illegal by Russia. Google and Meta were fined 7.2 billion rubles (₹713.4 crore) and 2 billion rubles (₹198.16 crore), respectively for the same reason in December 2021.
