1. Minister for Commerce and Industry and G20 Sherpa Piyush Goyal on Monday held a fruitful virtual meeting with French G20 Sherpa Emmanuel Bonne. Both Ministers shared insights on economic recovery, vaccine equity, Intellectual property rights IPR matters, technology transfer, sustainable lifestyles and biodiversity. They also reviewed India-France cooperation in G20 context

2. Three fishermen from Tamil Nadu were attacked by Sri Lankan pirates off Kodiakarai coast on Monday, the Coastal Security Group police said. A band of pirates in a fast craft approached the fishermen, jumped into their fishing boat and attacked them with iron rods, it added. The pirates fled with the catch, fishing nets and GPS equipment.

1. Communal clashes in South Sudan, at least 31 ethnic Dinka people, including three children, were killed on Sunday in clashes with suspected armed Murle youth in the restive state of Jonglei.

2. Italian Parliament begins secret voting to elect next President
Over 1,000 Italian MPs, senators and representatives on Monday began the first round of secret ballot to determine their next President. As PM Mario Draghi eyes the top post in the wide-open contest, other candidates include Justice Minister Marta Cartabia and former premier Giuliano Amato. The outgoing President, Sergio Mattarella is set to step down on February 3.

3. US Space Force on Friday launched two identical Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) satellites to keep a “neighbourhood watch” on critical orbits. The satellites will orbit the earth nearly 36,000 kilometres above the equator. GSSAP satellites will monitor other high-altitude satellites used by military spacecraft and communication stations

4. Lebanon’s former PM Saad Hariri announced on Monday that he is suspending his work in politics and will not contest upcoming parliamentary elections in May.

5. Indonesia reopened two islands, Bintan and Batam, for fully vaccinated and insured tourists from Singapore amid rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

6. YouTube accounts of several cryptocurrency creators and Indian cryptocurrency exchanges, including Unocoin and WazirX, were hacked on Monday. The hacker posted unauthorised videos titled “One World Cryptocurrency” with text directing viewers to send crypto to a wallet address in exchange for a new cryptocurrency called “OWCY”. Compromised YouTubers include Ivan on Tech and Floyd Mayweather.
