INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. Hindu pilgrims from India, the US and the Gulf region prayed at the 100-year-old renovated Maharaja Paramhans Ji temple in northwest Pakistan on Saturday amidst tight security, one year after the temple was demolished by an angry mob in 2020.

2. Beginning January 1, 2022 India chaired the Counter-terrorism Committee. Former Indian Ambassador to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri, had chaired the CTC for the term 2011-12 when India was last in the UNSC as a non-permanent member. India votes in favour of UNSC resolution to renew mandate of Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate.

3. The UN Security Council, through its written silence procedure, renewed the mandate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) until December 31, 2025. An interim review will be conducted in December 2023.

1. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said that Taliban need to reform their policies if they desire international recognition.

2. U.S. has appointed two women diplomats to senior posts representing Washington in Afghanistan. Rina Amiri has been appointed as a special envoy for Afghan women, girls and human rights. She has spent two decades advising governments, the UN and think-tanks on issues related to Afghanistan.

3. UAE announces to ban unvaccinated citizens from travelling abroad from Jan 10. Citizens who are fully vaccinated will also be required to take a booster shot against Covid-19 if eligible in order to travel. Ban will not apply to those with medical or humanitarian exemptions.

4. The Taliban have ordered clothing shop owners in Afghanistan to remove the heads of the mannequins at their stores. The Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Afghanistan’s Herat province issued the instructions.

5. France eases COVID-19 norms, cuts quarantine for vaccinated people.

6. Nearly nine thousand people were evacuated after heavy rains caused floods in seven Malaysian states, the National Disaster Management Agency said.
