1. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla called on the Chairperson of the State Administrative Council (SAC) Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, other senior representatives and held meetings with members of civil society and political parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD) on his second and concluding day of working visit to Myanmar. Foreign Secretary also exchanged views with select ambassadors in Myanmar on issues of mutual interest.

2. Foreign Secretary emphasised India’s interest in seeing Myanmar’s return to democracy at the earliest, release of detainees and prisoners, resolution of issues through dialogue and complete cessation of all violence.

3. Foreign Secretary Shringla expressed India’s continued support to the people centric developmental projects along the India- Myanmar border areas as well as India’s commitment for expeditious implementation of ongoing connectivity initiatives like the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport project and the Trilateral Highway.

4. The joint management of India and Russia has approved the appointment of Atul Dinkar Rane as the CEO and CMD of BrahMos Aerospace Limited, officials from BrahMos Aerospace Limited said. Rane was instrumental in the induction of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile in armed forces. BrahMos also appointed Senior DRDO scientist Dr Sanjeev Kumar Joshi as the Deputy CEO.

1. 39 people were killed and more than 70 sustained burn injuries as a passenger ferry caught fire midstream in the Sugandha river near Jhalokati sadar upazila in Bangladesh in the early hours of Friday.

2. Thailand, the first case of coronavirus infections from the Omicron variant has been detected in Kalasin province of the northeastern part of the country. The announcement comes as Thailand’s capital city Bangkok cancelled government-sponsored New Year activity, including midnight prayers.

3. World’s first dual-mode vehicle (DMV) that can run on both roads and railway tracks is set to make debut in Japan’s Kaiyo on Saturday. The vehicle runs on rubber tyres on road and steel wheels descend from its underbelly when it arrives at an interchange. It runs at a speed of 60km/h on rail tracks and around 100km/h on roads.

4. France makes -ve COVID test mandatory to visit its overseas territories.

4. The US will lift travel restrictions on eight southern African countries on December 31, the White House announced on Friday. The restrictions had been imposed last month amid concerns about the Omicron COVID-19 variant. “The restrictions gave us time to understand Omicron and we know our existing vaccines work against Omicron,” a White House official said.
