1. In Badminton, Kidambi Srikanth bagged a historic silver medal after losing to Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 15-21, 20-22 in the Men’s singles final of BWF World Championships at Huelva in Spain this evening. Srikanth is the first Indian to finish runners-up.
2. In a historic all-Indian semifinal, Srikanth defeated compatriot Lakshya Sen with 17-21, 21-14, 21-17. Lakshya finished with the bronze medal. This is the first time that India got two medals in the men’s singles in the same edition of the Badminton World championships.
3. Before this, India got two bronze medals in the Men’s singles at the Badminton world championships with Prakash Padukone in 1983 and B Sai Praneeth in 2019.
4. The BCCI named KL Rahul as vice-captain for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa. Rahul replaces Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out of the Test series owing to a hamstring injury. The first Test of the series will start on Boxing Day in Centurion. It will be followed by the second Test in Johannesburg from January 3 and the third and final Test in Cape Town from January 11.
5. India’s tour of South Africa will begin from December 26 instead of Dec. 17. The tour was scheduled to begin from Dec. 17 but got pushed back due to the Omicron variant threat.
6. England Test captain Joe Root has set the record for scoring most runs in Test cricket as England captain. The 30-year-old has scored 4,859 runs in 106 innings as Test captain. He overtook the previous record held by Alastair Cook, who scored 4,844 runs in 111 innings as Test captain. Root has a Test batting average of 47.63 as captain.
