INTERNATIONAL NEWS
1. India ranked fourth most powerful country according to the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index. However, India’s overall score went down by two points from 2020, standing at 37.7 out of 100. It fell short of the major power threshold and is among the 18 countries which showed a downward trend in overall scores in 2021.

2. US aerospace company Lockheed Martin approved the manufacturing of wings of F-16 fighter jets at the Tata-Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) facility. The joint venture with Tatas will cater to the global market.

3. PM Modi is expected to open his 2022 foreign visit calendar by trip to trusted allies United Arab Emirates and Kuwait early next month.

4. To ensure the smooth passage of international travellers arriving in India, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has mandated contactless self-declaration at Air Suvidha Portal. “Air Suvidha portal has already assisted 2,51,210 passengers from 1st Dec 2021 to 05th Dec 2021.

5. Russia’s Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev said his country has lost a very close friend as he condoled the demise of India’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat. “(He) played a big role in the promotion of our bilateral special and privileged strategic partnership. 1. US President Joe Biden warned President Vladimir Putin on 07 Dec of “strong” Western economic blowback against any Russian attack on Ukraine, while the Kremlin leader demanded guarantees that the NATO alliance keep clear of Russia.

2. The two leaders met by video link in a two-hour summit seen as a vital chance to defuse tension on the Russian-Ukrainian frontier, where Russia has deployed up to 100,000 troops, sparking fears of a major war in Europe. Russia denies planning to invade Ukraine, where it already seized swaths of territory in 2014.

3. US Hits Iran With New Sanctions For “Serious” Human Rights Abuses:: The sanctions announced by the Treasury and State Department targeted government officials and organizations involved in the repression of protesters and political activists.

4. Omicron does not appear to cause more severe disease than previous Covid variants, and is “highly unlikely” to fully dodge vaccine protections, a top WHO official told.
